A juvenile was wounded Wednesday in an apparent accidental shooting incident.

According to the Covington County Sheriff’s Office, a female juvenile was wounded by a single gunshot in the late hours of Wednesday, August 10.

A press release states that a male juvenile was in the back seat of a vehicle playing with an old handgun. Investigators learned the gun was loaded with a single bullet and was not in proper operating order.

Sheriff Blake Turman said the male juvenile, while playing with the gun, accidentally discharged one round into the back of the female juvenile. The incident is being ruled an accident by investigators.

The female victim was treated and released from the hospital. The CCSO press release stated that no additional information is available as the investigation is ongoing.
