Lillian Lee recently set up the Jerry Garrett and Starlinne Sullivan Memorial EMS Scholarship for any undergraduate student in Alabama pursuing nursing or the EMS field.
Lee moved to the community a year ago and has worked at Andalusia Health for eight years. “The scholarship used to be just in my dad’s name, but when my mother passed away last year, I added her name,” she said.
The statewide scholarship award will be awarded to two winners at $500 per winner. The application deadline is August 10, 2022. Winners will be announced on September 10. Prior to the announcement date, finalists may be contacted with additional questions about their application. Winners will be chosen based on the merit of their application.
This scholarship aims to support students in Alabama who are pursuing careers as first responders or nurses. Interested applicants may apply by writing a 400 to 600-word essay and sharing how pursuing a career in nursing or EMS would impact their local community.
Award checks will be sent to the financial aid office of the winner’s academic institution in their name to be applied to their tuition and in the name of their institution, depending on the school’s requirements. Before the scholarship is awarded, the winner will be required to confirm academic enrollment status. Depending on the circumstances, verification of student ID and/or the student’s most recent transcript will be required.
“Sullivan and Garrett were beloved and determined parents who passed away too soon. Starlinne worked as a nurse for 30 years, impacting the lives of the countless people she served. Jerry was also motivated and with persistence was able to achieve his goal of obtaining his GED later in life,” a statement read.
