Those considering a run at a political office in 2022 have a few days left to qualify.

Qualifying for state and local offices will end at 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 28.

Voters in Covington County and across the state will decide several offices in the 2022 election. Covington County seats up for election include Circuit Court Judge-Place 2, District Attorney, Sheriff, County Board of Education-Place 4, and Coroner.

Statewide offices on this year’s ballot will include U.S. Senator, U.S. House of Representative, Governor, Lt. Governor, Attorney General, State Senator-District 31, State Representative-District 92, Secretary of State, State Auditor, State Treasurer, and Commissioner of Agriculture.

According to the Covington County chairs for the Republican and Democratic parties, a number of people have already qualified to run in the 2022 election, but there is still time for others who are considering public office.

“I encourage people to run. If they ever had an interest in running, now is the time to do it,” said Covington County Republican Party Chair William Blocker.

“Sometimes people think they are not the ones who can make positive change,” said Covington County Democrat Chair Ava Williamson. “Sometimes we have to be the ones to take that first step and we encourage anyone who is interested to take that first step.”

Blocker added that the Republican Party will host a series of candidate forums with events being planned in Andalusia, Opp and Florala with details to be announced.

The primary election will be held May 24. A runoff will be held mid-June, if needed.
