Kathleen was born in Etowah County (Gadsden) Alabama to mother, Estell Story, and father, Lorenzo Dow Story. Her husband, Dr. William H. McWhorter, is deceased. Both Kathleen and her husband were graduates of Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama. Additionally, Kathleen earned a bachelor’s degree from Troy State College. She had one sister who is now deceased, Francis Whitehead, and nieces Julia Juillerat and Alice Trout.
She is survived by: three children, William Timothy McWhorter (wife Julie McWhorter) of Camilla, Georgia, Lillian Rogers of Laramie, Wyoming, and Suzanne Colvin (husband Paul Rothstein) of Gainesville, Florida; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was a devoted mother and grandmother. Kathleen lived most of her adult life in Andalusia where her husband was president of Lurleen B. Wallace State College and she was an elementary teacher for close to 40 years. She and her husband retired and later owned and operated three American Schools in Venezuela for close to 10 years. A dedicated educator, she touched the lives of many who still remember her to this day. She passed on to her children her wit, creativity, joy for life, and so much love. She will be loved and remembered always.
There will be a celebration of her life with her family in the weeks to follow. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the William Horace McWhorter scholarship fund at Lurleen B. Wallace Community College, Andalusia, Alabama.
