Andalusia local Amy Henderson said she finds joy in helping people relax, which is why she has opened a skin therapy salon.

One year ago, Henderson started working with Lindsey Reeves at Utopia Salon and found her calling for skin therapy.

“Originally, I was a yoga instructor,” Henderson said. “At the end of class, there is a moment where the instructor applies acupressure. That sensation of really helping people relax was a really neat feeling. That is when I started to think that it might be really cool to be involved in a career where that is the main objective.”

Henderson said the best part of her job is the clients.

“I meet all kinds of different people,” Henderson said. “It is always a positive interaction. I find people fascinating, and the greatest thing about doing this is that you actually get to be very proactive in helping people. Every time I have an appointment, it is a positive interaction and I love that.”

She credits LBW community college for her quality education in cosmetology.

“They just have an amazing program,” Henderson said. “As a student, you do almost 700 to a thousand hours of hands-on experience.”

Looking back, Henderson realized that she has come full circle in her career choice.

“When I graduated high school, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do,” Henderson said. “I begged my mom to let me go to cosmetology school, but I never went. I have gone through lifetimes of careers, and now I have come full circle.”

Henderson said the main goal of her business is to grow.

“I just want people to know that they can come in,” Henderson said. “I think there is an educational component, as well, because there are a lot of things that I offer that people haven’t even heard of.”

Henderson’s hours are Tuesday from 10 a.m., until 2 p.m.; Wednesday from 9 a.m., until 5 p.m.; Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m., until 6 p.m., and she said she will add Saturdays if necessary.
