Straughn High School has a new principal.
The Covington County Board of Education voted unanimously to promote Matt Cobb to principal.
The board also accepted the retirement resignation of Donny Powell.
Superintendent Shannon Driver said that Powell approached him around Thanksgiving and told him he was considering retiring.
“We appreciate his hard work,” Driver said. “He has been with us 28 or 29 years.”
Powell said that Cobb has served as assistant principal for several years at Straughn, and has also served as a math teacher at Straughn Middle School and Florala High School.
“He is very well thought of and respected in the community,” Driver said. “We are excited about Mr. Cobb.”
He is an SHS alumnus and has served as interim principal since Dec. 1, 2019.
