Former Opp Bobcat and current Troy Trojan Orlando Lacey picked up his first career interception in Troy’s 35-7 win over Akron on Saturday.
Lacey’s intercepted a pass from T.J. DeShields in the fourth quarter that helped seal the Trojans’ victory.
“It was an awesome feeling,” Lacey said of the interception. “The coaches gave a great play call and it worked out in our favor.”
Lacey said it was play that meant a lot to him.
“The first thing that went through my mind when I caught it I was like, ‘I think God and I know that my grandma saw that play from heaven,’” Lacey said. “What made that feeling better was my teammates when they came and dog piled me after the ruling that I caught the ball came from the officials.”
As the play developed, Lacey said he knew he had a chance at the ball.
“When the ball left the quarterbacks hand, I was thinking to myself that man I have to make this play and I did,” Lacey said. “It was a tough play, but I made it and I was very excited.”
Lacey said that the team is continuing to grow early in the season.
“I feel really good about the season at this point,” Lacey said. “I feel good because of how our team is really close and how we work really hard every single day. We know that every week the coaches are going to give us a great game plan and opportunity to go out there and execute at a high level on Saturdays. I feel really good about the team, the season and starting conference (play) this week.”
Troy is 2-1 on the season and will host the Arkansas State Red Wolves on Saturday in Troy.
