The Florala Wildcats opened up region play with big 30-20 win over the Georgiana Panthers on Friday night in Florala.
“This was a great win for us,” Florala head coach Toby Greene said. “We played a total team game.”
Florala came out and drove the ball right down the field to start the game.
“It really was a total team game,” Greene said. “The offense came out and scored early and got up on them. We then gave up some field possession. Our defense kind of had their back against the wall a couple of times and got stops to keep us in the game. We even had a special teams touchdown. It was a total team win.”
Rashaad Coleman got the scoring started with a 12-yard touchdown run.
Coleman connected with Anthone Stone for the two-point conversion to put Florala up 8-0.
A few drives later, Coleman found Stone for a 44-yard touchdown. Coleman and Stone hooked up again for the two-point conversion to give Florala a 16-0 lead.
Coleman was on fire as he then hit Austin Howell on a 22-yard touchdown pass, but the extra point missed and Florala was up 22-0.
Georgiana fought back and made the score 22-14.
The final score of the game came on an 80-yard kickoff return by Logan West that helped seal the deal.
“They scored then Logan West ran a kickoff back 80 yards for a touchdown and they kind of really broke their backs,” Greene said. “Then we gave up one touchdown kind of late. We were up 30-14 at halftime.”
Josh Settles and Coleman each had interceptions for the Wildcats.
“Our kids came out with confidence,” Greene said. “It’s been a long time since Florala has beat Georgiana. They felt they could do it and never doubted themselves. I was impressed that even though we made mistakes and would do something to give up a short field, our defense stood tall and kept us in the game. We had a great crowd here for our home and region opener. We are glad to be 1-0 in the region.”
Florala hits the road next week for a region game against the Brantley Bulldogs.
