Some kids spend their summers mowing lawns or cleaning pools for money, but Andalusia High School alumna Sadie Brown spends hers running her own online boutique.
Brown knew that she wanted to start her own store eventually, but she didn’t think that it would happen so soon.
“About a year ago I decided to start the online boutique,” Brown said. “I did it before as a side job thing, but now I am doing it almost full time. It was a spur of the moment thing that I had always wanted to do.”
Styles by Sadie, which is run through Facebook, provides several different options of clothing, accessories and shoes.
“The best part about this business is that I get to be flexible with it,” Brown said. “I get to do it whenever I want to, like if I need to stay up late at night or do it in the morning, I can. I also get to provide trendy clothing and deal with great people every day.”
The most challenging part of her job is time. She is a student at the University of Alabama, a member of the sorority Phi Mu, runs her own business and works at Victoria Secret in Tuscaloosa.
“Balancing everything is the toughest part,” Brown said. “Some days I have to stay up pretty late to get homework done or get orders out. So, I would say time is the most challenging thing. I know that I have to plan everything in advance to make sure that I schedule around tests and homework. That way I don’t get behind on anything.”
Being a role model for younger girls is something that Brown takes pride in being.
“I definitely recommend doing something like this if you are young,” Brown said. “The younger you start, the more potential that you have. So, starting young is a smart decision.”
The end goal for Brown is to open her own retail store.
“There are a lot of things that I want to do with my life,” Brown said. “I do want to open a retail store with the warehouse, store front and everything. I do want to keep going with the virtual store right now though, but I know that I have to build up to that point.”
Brown is currently studying fashion retail and marketing at the University of Alabama.
