The Andalusia Ballet will present “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at 7:30 p.m. on Fri., May 10.
The ballet features music by Felix Mendelssohn and choreography by Andalusia Ballet’s founder and artistic director, Meryane Murphy.
“This ballet is based on one of Shakespeare’s happiest and most-love comedies,” she said. “It is called a dream because of the unrealistic happenings that occur to the characters in the play – real yet unreal events, such as crossed lovers, meaningless quarrels and forest chases leading to more confusion and magic spells woven by the infamous Puck.”
Andalusia Ballet’s Kole Varner will dance the role of Puck, the mischievous servant of Oberon, king of the fairies, danced by guest artist Raul Peinado. The Alabama Ballet’s Andres Angulo Castillo will dance the role of Theseus, Duke of Athens, and Frederic Rocas will dance the role of Demetrius, suitor of Hermia. And the Alabama Ballet’s Jonathan Carter will dance the role of Lysander.
Sydney Ward will dance the role of Titania, Queen of the Fairies, and Lindsey Stephens will dance the role of Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons.
Others dancing leading roles include Lucy Dantz, Hermia; Emily Ward, Helena; and Gibson Craig, Titania’s attendant.
The one-night-only performance begins at 7:30 p.m. at the LBWCC Dixon Center. Admission is $15.
