OPP SWEEPS WICKSBURG: Bobcats rally twice to advance to round 2

The Opp Bobcats advanced to the second round of the Class 3A playoffs after sweeping Wicksburg on Friday night in Opp.

GAME ONE

OPP 4,

WICKSBURG 3

In the first game of the series, the Bobcats rallied in the final inning to pick up a 4-3 victory.

Taylor Duffell got the start on the mound and struck out the first batter he faced on the way to a 1-2-3 inning.

Logan Ross drew a walk off Auburn University commit Kade Snell.

Ross moved to second on a passed ball and then over to third on dropped third strike.

Snell then got Jesse Coon to ground out, but Ross was able to score the first run of the game to put Opp on top.

River Day followed with an infield single.

Dalton Grider kept the inning alive when he was hit by Snell.

Case Short followed with a single that scored Day for a 2-0 Opp lead.

In the top of the third inning, Wicksburg chipped into the Opp lead when they scored a run off of an error.

After struggling in the opening frame, Snell bounced back to retire eight Bobcats in a row.

Wicksburg tied the game in the top of the fourth.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Snell picked up a ground out and strikeout to start the frame before giving up a pair of walks.

Snell then got anther strikeout to leave the game tied after four innings of play.

Wicksburg grabbed a 3-2 lead with a single in the top of the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Trey Spurlin picked up a two-out single off Snell for the first Opp hit since the first inning.

However, Snell struck out the next batter to end the inning.

Opp got in a jam after walking a pair of batters to start the top of the seventh inning.

Trey Boutwell then got a strikeout for the first out.

Wicksburg looked like they might increase their lead Snell ripped a double down the right field line.

Short fielded the ball quickly in right field and fired the ball back to the infield.

The runner from second raced home, but the throw was well ahead of him and Opp caught him in a run down for the second out of the inning.

Lane Ballard then made an acrobatic catch at shortstop to end the threat.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Brady James reached off of an error to start the frame.

Snell then struck out the next batter for the first out.

Snell threw one pitch to the next batter before the Wicksburg coach pulled him as he neared his pitch count.

James pulled off a delayed steal of second that forced the Wicksburg catcher to fire the ball wildly into the outfield.

James raced to third and Wicksburg again threw the ball away and James raced home to tie the game.

Opp loaded the bases with singles from Ballard, Coon and Day.

The Bobcats then earned the win when Short was hit by a pitch to bring Ballard into the winning run.

GAME TWO

OPP 3,

WICKSBURG 1

The Bobcats finished off the sweep with a 3-1 victory in game two.

Spurlin put the Bobcats on top 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning with a two-run double.

Day drove in Ross in the top of the fifth inning.

The Bobcats will travel to Montgomery on Friday to take on St. James in the second round of the Class 3A state playoffs.
