Sixth graders at W.S Harlan Elementary chose to carry on the school’s Alabama Bicentennial celebration by taking their class trip to Battleship Memorial Park on Friday, April 12. Students toured the USS Alabama battleship, the USS Drum submarine, the site’s aircraft pavilion, and the special exhibit that day, the Dixie Division Military Vehicle Show. It was a day full of history and fun.
According to the park’s website, the USS Drum is the oldest American submarine on public display.
With nine battle stars, the USS Alabama, known as the “Mighty A” and the “Heroine of the Pacific,” culminated its WWII service by leading the American Fleet into Tokyo Bay on September 5, 1945.
With the help of the citizens and school children of Alabama, the battleship made its way to Mobile Bay and became the state’s military memorial.
