Carolyn Clark Simmons
Mrs. Carolyn Clark Simmons, wife of the late James Bernard Simmons, passed away on Saturday, January 12, 2019 in Dothan, Alabama. She lived most of her adult life in Andalusia, Alabama. She was predeceased by her parents, George Decolma and Ella Trawick Clark; her sisters, Leona Clark Horne and Maude Clark Pruett; and brother ,William Merlin (Buck) Clark. She is survived by nieces, Mary Marshall Pruett Whatley, Gay Clark Blalock, Jane Horne Ramsey, Dorothy Simmons Clark, Lillian Simmons Dickson, Carolyn Clark Tavel, Hannah Simmons Pickworth, and Ann Simmons Johnson, and nephews Edwin Clark Pruett, Morgan Simmons, Robert Clark and Donald Simmons; and a large number of great nieces and nephews. She grew up in the Taylor Community of Dothan where she attended Tabernacle United Methodist Church. She joined the Presbyterian Church at the time of her marriage. She lived a life of faithful service.
She attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University) in order to graduate from high school at age sixteen and graduated from Alabama Women’s College at Montevallo. Upon graduation she taught school in Bonifay, Florida and Marianna, Florida. She then worked with the Alabama Cooperative Extensive Service in Andalusia until her marriage. She spent the last 15 years of her life as caregiver for her niece in Dothan.
Funeral services will be at the First Presbyterian Church, Andalusia, on Thursday, January 17 at 11 A.M. with visitation at the church one hour prior. Conducting the service will be the Rev. Robert Madsen and the Rev. David Judd. David has been like a beloved son to Carolyn and a steadfast friend for almost 40 years. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery in Andalusia.
The family is indebted to four most loving caregivers who ministered to Carolyn during her last years: Callie Baxter, Cathy Ashley, Teresa Crews and Donna Taylor. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to the Presbyterian Children’s Home, 905 Gertrude Michaels Drive., Talledega, AL 35160 or the First Presbyterian Church, 223 South 3 Notch Street Andalusia, AL 36420.
