HAMNER “HAM” PRESTON CURRY
Danny Kaye said that “life is a great big canvas: throw all the paint you can at it.” Maybe that’s what Hamner “Ham” Preston Curry of River Falls, Ala., thought each day of his 56 years with Sherwin Williams, where he helped many people add color to their homes and their lives.
Ham passed away with his family beside him Wed., Sept. 26, 2018, at the age of 84 after an extended illness. His friends and family knew him as a principled man, with a deep abiding faith as evidenced in his actions, if not words.
Ham excelled as an athlete in his early years, graduating in 1954, and lettering in three sports at Red Level High School where he was a star pitcher. For a time he played professional baseball with the Andy Semi-pros. Ham then joined the Army in 1957, and even pitched for the B Company during basic training at Ft. Benning, Ga. When Ham completed his initial enlistment in 1959, he returned to River Falls and began his long career with Sherwin Williams in Andalusia. Ham also joined the National Guard where he served for over 23 years, retiring as a Sergeant First Class. He was deployed to Selma during the 1965 Civil Rights March.
After Ham returned, he met the love of his life, Norma Ann Sasser (Nonnie) and they married in 1964. He built their home and over time supervised two major additions. They enjoyed landscaping together and created one of the prettiest yards in River Falls, adorning their gardens with beautiful camellia bushes and other colorful flowers and trees. It brought them, and others, such joy to stroll around their yard. Ham also served on the River Falls City Council for 34 and a half years.
Ham was predeceased by his parents, Earl Curry and Christine Waters; his siblings, Cupie Dean Sowell, Ida G. (Ben) Herring, Bud Herring, and Annie Joe Sexton.
He leaves behind to mourn his loss his beloved Norma and many nieces and nephews: John David Herring, Rhonda Fay Kelly, Annie Jo Sexton, Belinda Joice Wells, Mary Elizabeth Colley, Tommy Sowell, Ruby Jean Lambert, Bobbie Jo Rowe, James Sasser and Walt Sasser. Nephews Joseph Benson (Jo Ben) Herring, and Westley Omara Smith. His niece Ida Elaine Manning also predeceased him.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., on Sat., Sept. 29, 2018, from Foreman Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Billy Boles, the Rev. Travis Day, and the Rev. Ed Ganus officiating the service, interment will follow in River Falls Cemetery. A visitation will be held Friday evening from 5:30 p.m., until 8 p.m., at Foreman Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Randy Hughes, Steve Kelly, Wayne Taylor, Brad Holden, and Chris Hall. Honorary pallbearers will be: John David Herring, John Rivers Herring, Tommy Sowell, Red Hallford, and Gary Wages.
