Inmate dies in county jail (Updated with identity)

The Andalusia Police Department is investigating the death of an inmate who died Wednesday while in custody at the Covington County Jail. Sheriff Dennis Meeks requested the investigation, in accordance with department procedures and state laws.
The inmate, Michael Ansley, 40, was taken into custody on August 26, 2018, when he was booked into the jail on the charge of Failure to Pay Child Support.
A corrections officer observed the man was unresponsive when he conducted a visual check on the holding cell where the inmate was housed by himself. He was found at 8:48 p.m., according to a press release from the Covington County Sheriff’s Department.
Corrections officers immediately summoned EMS to respond to the jail. The inmate was pronounced dead by a representative with the Covington County Coroner’s Office.
The Alabama Department of Forensic Science will determine the cause of death and forward its findings as prescribed by law.
