The mother of the 4-year-old child who died in May has been charged with criminally negligent homicide. She is free on bond.

The Covington County Sheriff’s Office on Friday charged Erica Dees, 30, with criminally negligent homicide in the death of her daughter, Layla Dees.

Reports indicated the child’s death was heat-related. She died Friday, May 18. She was a student at Bright Beginnings Preschool last year.

Dees was released on a $3,000 bond not long after her arrest.
