Nearly 400 students were honored in LBW Community College’s commencement ceremony Friday afternoon.
Commencement speaker Gary Smith, the president and chief executive officer of PowerSouth Energy Cooperative, reminded students that they had a whole life ahead of them.
“You all are young. Cherish these years and celebrate each day because it’s truly special,” Smith said.
In total, there were 373 graduates, including some who are completing degrees this summer. Twenty-four earned associates in arts; 154 earned associate degrees in science; 81 earned associates in applied science; and 113 earned certificates.
Also recognized as outstanding alumnus was Jimmy Hutto, who in addition to graduating from LBW, worked there for 36 years.
His message to the students that anything is possible.
“I wish the best for all of you as you move forward in your career and in anything you decide to do,” Hutto said.
Jason Jessie, dean of student affairs, also recognized Brandon Walker and Peighton Carpenter as the college’s 2018 All-Alabama Academic team members.
Walker will transfer to Auburn University in Montgomery and plans to earn a law degree.
Carpenter plans to attend Troy University in the nursing program.
“Each year the student affairs select to students to represent the college on the All-Alabama Academic team,” Jessie said.
“These students were chosen based on their academic achievements, leadership skills and community service.”
