TOP ATHLETES ON DISPLAY: Locals make strong showings at track-and-field finals

Several local athletes put in strong performances at the 2018 AHSAA Class 1A-3A state track-and-field meets this weekend in Cullman, with Pleasant Home’s River Baldwin picking up a gold medal finish.
In the Class 1A girls shot put event, Baldwin threw for a distance of 32-08.50 to pick up the state title.
Baldwin’s throw landed just five feet short of the state record set in 2004.
Along with her gold-medal finish, Baldwin picked up bronze in the girls discus throw with a distance of 91.
Ross Wilson also medaled for the Eagles as he picked up a third place finish in the boys 400-meter dash with a time of 52.63.
Pleasant Home got a bronze medal in the boys 4×800-meter relay with a time of 9:15.56. Runners included Matthew O’Rourke, Nathaniel Erwin, Kaleb Piland and Wilson.
Red Level also medaled during the weekend with Joel Phillips earning silver in the boys 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.16.
The following athletes competed in the state track-and-field finals, but did not medal in their events.
FLORALA
Cheyenne Regan came in 20th in the girls 100-meter hurdles with a time of 20.14.
Chance Bedsole pulled out an eighth place finish in the boys 300-meter hurdles with a time of 44.59.
RED LEVEL
Madison Shepard finished ninth in the girls 1600-meter run with a time of 6:06.58
Ramsey Morrow came in the 15th in the boys 100-meter dash with a time of 11.76.
Brody Ingram was 14th in the boys 400-meter dash with a time of 53.98.
Ingram also finished 15th in the boys javelin throw with a distance of 123-10.
Phillips finished fifth in the boys 300-meter hurdles with a time of 43.40.
Ramsey Morrow finished ninth in the boys long jump with a distance of 19-05.50.
Red Level’s 4×400-meter relay time finished sixth with a time of 3:47.51.
PLEASANT HOME
Peyton Huckabaa finished 20th in girls discus throw with a distance of 58-01.
Huckabaa pulled out a seventh place finish in the girls javelin throw with a distance of 93-01.
Matthew O’Rourke finished 10th in the boys 800-meter run with a time of 2:14.66.
O’Rourke also finished 12th in the boys 1600-meter run with a time of 5:18.80.
Wilson came in 11th in the boys 800-meter run with a time of 2:14.73.
Nathanial Erwin came in 21st place in the boys 800-meter run with a time of 2:22.18.
Logan Bolling finished 11th in the boys 3200-meter run with a time of 12:09.33.
Kaleb Piland came in seventh place in the boys javelin throw with a distance of 141-05.
STRAUGHN
Abigail Thomas finished 13th in the girls 3200-meter run with a time of 13:34.11.
Straughn’s 4×800-meter girls relay team finished 12th with a time of 12:02.07.
Aryanna Billips finished 10th in the girls javelin throw with a time of 93-08.
Tucker Reynolds came in 10th in the boys 3200-meter run with a time of 10:57.47.
Justin Peeples finished 11th in the boys 3200-meter run with a time of 10:59.96.
Straughn’s boys 4×800-meter relay team picked up an 11th place finish with a time of 9:22.51.
Ryan Mitchell came in 11th place in the boys discus throw with a distance of 116-01.
Hunter Stephens finished 23rd in the boys javelin throw with a distance of 114-02.
