Conecuh County Commissioner Johnny Andrews has been indicted on six felony counts of unlawful distribution of marijuana, a controlled substance. Andrews surrendered Wednesday at the Conecuh County Jail and was released on bond.
The Attorney General’s Criminal Trials Division presented evidence to a Conecuh County grand jury on March 27, which returned an indictment against Andrews the following day.
A joint investigation between the Attorney General’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation had previously revealed evidence that Andrews made at least six separate sales of illegal controlled substances in Conecuh County. Andrews was arrested on warrants for these offenses on March 16, 2017. The current indictments stem from the same events and facts that led to those prior arrest warrants.
No further information about the investigation or about the alleged crimes other than that stated in the indictments and warrants may be released at this time. There are currently no scheduled trial or court dates for this matter.
If convicted, Andrews faces a maximum penalty of two to 10 years of imprisonment for each of the counts, which are class B felonies.Furthermore, Section 36-9-2 of the Code of Alabama states that when an officeholder is convicted of a felony, the office is vacated from the time of conviction.
If any member of the public believes they may have information related to these charges or this defendant, he or she is urged to contact the Attorney General’s Office at (334) 242-7300 and ask for the Investigations Division.
