For those who have been craving donuts in Opp, there is no longer a need to drive to Andalusia.

On Feb. 5, the Opp Donut Shop will be open to the public.

Linda Clifton, the owner, said the idea to own a donut shop jokingly came up in conversation with her husband, James.

“We kind of went back and forth every once in a while saying, ‘There really should be a donut shop in Opp,’ and finally I just said, ‘Let’s just do it,’” Clifton said.

From there, it was all planning.

In October, Clifton purchased the building across from her husband’s gun shop at 112 W. Covington Ave., and began from there.

“There was really a lot of work needed to be done, the building was from 1920,” she said.

“We gutted it ourselves, had a contractor rip out the wiring and had to redo all of the plumbing. We made sure everything was up to code and state-of-the-art.”

As for the appearance of the building, Clifton assures it will be nice to look at.

“The decorations we did all on our own, so they’re very unique. We want to be more memorable,” Clifton said.

There’s another unique aspect to the donut shop, she said.

“We actually have a donut robot system. Most donut shops flip their donuts individually, making it hard to make sure each donut cooked thoroughly. No two donuts cook the same,” Clifton said.

“Our donuts are cooked two at a time and they actually flip themselves. From there, they go down the conveyor and onto a tray where I have two employees with bakery experience decorate or glaze the donuts.”

This system makes sure that every donut is evenly cooked with the same temperature and same amount of cooking, Clifton said.

Clifton’s goods will be free of any kind of nuts or tree nuts.

“I just want everyone to be able to eat our donuts, I don’t want anyone to have any kind of limitation,” she said.

The shop won’t just offer donuts.

“We’ll have classic donuts, apple fritters, premium coffee, juices and milk.”

Clifton expects to be up at 4 a.m. every morning to come and prepare for the day.

“We will make fresh donuts before the start of the day at 6 a.m.,” she said.

“It will definitely make for some early mornings.”

Clifton expects to have a successful opening.

“I’m really excited, I’ve already received tremendous support from our Facebook page. Everyone is so excited to have something like this in Opp.”

The Opp Donut Shop will open on At 6 a.m. on Mon., Feb.5. The hours of operation are 6 a.m. to 11 a.m., Monday through Saturday.
