Alabama’s runoff for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate gained national attention after President Donald Trump endorsed and stumped for incumbent Sen. Luther Strange, who lost to Roy Moore, the twice- ousted Alabama Chief Justice.
Here’s what political leaders had to say after the votes were counted.
- President Donald J. Trump (via Twitter): “Congratulations to Roy Moore on his Republican Primary win in Alabama. Luther Strange started way back & ran a good race. Roy, WIN in Dec!”
Trump was said to have deleted his previous pro-Strange tweets.
- Alabama Republican Party Chairman Terry Lathan: “Congratulations to Judge Roy Moore on his victory as the Republican nominee for the United States Senate. The GOP voters have spoken and made their choice clear in this election. The Alabama Republican Party fully supports Roy Moore as our U.S. Senate nominee. We will put our full forces and large infrastructure behind Judge Moore as we focus on winning the general election. The seat that Jeff Sessions held so honorably for twenty years will continue to be a Republican seat.”
- Gov. Kay Ivey: “One of my first acts as governor was to move the special election date so it was held in compliance with the law. Now the people have had their say …I appreciate Sen. Luther Strange’s years of dedicated service to our state and thank him for his unwavering commitment to Alabama. Congratulations are also due to Roy Moore on his win, and I look forward to supporting him as our party’s nominee.”
- U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell: “I would like to congratulate Roy Moore on his victory in Alabama tonight. He ran a spirited campaign centered around a dissatisfaction with the progress made in Washington. I share that frustration and believe that enacting the agenda the American people voted for last November requires us all to work together. We look forward to Judge Moore’s help enacting that agenda when he arrives.”
- DNC Associate Chair and Counselor Jaime Harrison: “Roy Moore has demonstrated time and again that he is unfit to represent Alabamians in the U.S. Senate. As a judge, he raised his own taxpayer-funded salary, even though Alabama’s judges were the already the highest paid in the nation. Twice, he was stripped of his duties as chief justice for defying the law. And on top of that, he and his wife pocketed more than $1 million from their own charity. Alabamians deserve better. They deserve an independent leader like Doug Jones as their next senator.”
