Getting older doesn’t mean you can’t have fun anymore, and that’s what the City of Florala set out to show Thursday afternoon with the Big Bingo Bash.
The City of Florala and the Florala Senior Center hosted the Big Bingo Bash for more than 100 senior citizens from Samson, Florala, Andalusia and Opp.
“We just wanted to give something back to the senior citizens of the community,” Florala Mayor Terry Holley said of the event. “We’re just giving back to these great seniors and saying thank you to them.”
The seniors got a chance to play bingo, with a number of prizes provided by local businesses, as well as take part in a penny auction. They also received gift bags.
Holley said that it’s important to show senior citizens that there are still a lot of activities they can do, no matter the age.
“This is our chance to not just say ‘thank you’ to the seniors but also be able to show them that there is still a lot of activities they can do,” he said. “It’s not just bringing the community together or even towns together, but its also bringing goodwill which is a big thing.”
Holley said that it’s important to not forget senior citizens and show appreciation for the things they’ve done in their lives.
“I think this is so great,” Holley said. “I believe in helping everybody but especially our senior citizens, because a lot of times I think they really get neglected.”
Holley said the Big Bingo Bash also gave the town a chance to show off beautiful Lake Jackson to the seniors, and that he hoped this event could become a regular thing for Florala.
