Covington County’s Relay for Life event will be held tonight at the Kiwanis Community Center, and volunteers have already raised $77,000 for the American Cancer Society.
Cancer survivors are asked to check in between 5 and 5:30 p.m.
There will be an opening ceremony at 6 p.m., with the introduction of survivors, followed by a survivors’ lap at 6:30 p.m. The caregivers’ lap will immediately follow.
This year’s 20 Relay for Life teams will then be introduced and begin walking the relay.
Randi Bozeman, who is among the organizers of the 2017 event, said luminaries, lanterns and torches in honor or memory of cancer survivors and patients will be available for sale at the Relay event until they are lighted shortly after dark. A new feature this year is a pinwheel garden in honor of caregivers.
“These are $5 each,” Bozeman said. “A lot of survivors have shown interest in honoring caregivers. They also can be purchased that night.
This year’s event has a fairy tale theme, and participants are welcome to dress according to theme.
“We want everybody to have fun,” Bozeman said.
A number of activities are planned until 10 p.m.
