Swimmers from Covington County made a strong showing this weekend in the 2016 AHSAA Swimming and Diving Championship Meet at Auburn University.
Opp senior Mary Beth Baker picked up a medal in the girls’ 100-yard freestyle event with a third place finish with a time of 53.93.
“I was so overwhelmed joy,” Baker said about medaling. “Especially, since I was the first swimmer from Opp to bring home a medal.
Opp’s Emma Younce had a big day on Saturday as she racked up a second place and fourth place finish.
In the girls’ 100-yard backstroke, Younce finished in second with a blistering time of 59.57. Younce also had a fourth place finish in the girls’ 100-yard freestyle event with a time of 54.05.
In the girls’ 200-yard individual medley, Andalusia’s Cali Fillmer finished with a time of 2:27.60.
Fillmer also finished in seventh in the girls’ 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:03.73.
Baker said she was thrilled with how the events went.
“I was so proud of Grace Philphot (from Straughn), who is only in the eighth grade, and she was so close to making finals. I was also proud of Emma (Younce) who brought home another medal for Opp, and also Cali Fillmer for making finals. I was so happy to experience this with some of my best friends,” Baker said. “We are so supportive of each other and to see all three schools unify and cheer each other on was amazing. I couldn’t have ended my high school swimming career any better than that.”
