Runners from all around have signed up to take part in this weekend’s 2nd Andalusia Civitan Club’s Holiday 5K run/walk and half-marathon this weekend in Andalusia.
“We have runners from all over the place signed up,” Civitan member Jennifer O’Neal said. “The furthest is a guy that is coming all the way from Puerto Rico, and we have several coming from many of the surrounding states.”
O’Neal said that half-marathons tend to bring in people from further away.
“Last year, we decided we wanted to do a run, but around here there are just so many 5Ks already,” O’Neal said. “So we decided to also include a half-marathon, which brings people from all over. It’s a really good opportunity for us to show off our beautiful city to people. We incorporate it into the city’s Christmas in Candyland to really show what a gem our city is.”
“As of right now, we have 117 runners signed up,” O’Neal said. “There were around 30 that signed up on raced day, so we are hoping to have more sign up on Saturday.”
Of the 117 participants, 40 have signed up for the half-marathon.
“There are a lot of people signed up for the half-marathon this year,” O’Neal said. “Some are repeats from last year, and we have a few that ran in the 5K last year that decided to give the half-marathon a try this year.”
The Holiday 5K run/walk and half-marathon have quickly become one the Civitan club’s biggest fundraiser.
“This is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year,” O’Neal said. “It really goes a long way to help us with all of our community projects. Last year, we were able to add several new angels to our Community Christmas just because of this event. It also helps us raise money for the scholarships that we offer to high school and college age kids. We have really had a lot of fun with it and we hope to continue to grow it with each year.”
The event begins at 7:30 a.m. For more information, or to register for the race visit the Andalusia Civitan Club’s page on Facebook.
