Straughn put forth a strong effort, but Luverne picked up a 54-35 victory over the Lady Tigers Monday night in the opening round of the 10th annual Straughn Lady Tiger Thanksgiving tournament.
“This was kind of a what our season has been like so far,” Straughn head coach Scott Kinsaul said. “We just get in droughts and we can’t score. We have to keep after it, and remember that tomorrow is another day.”
Luverne came storming out of the gate and grabbed a 7-0 lead before the Straughn was able to get on the scoreboard.
Sydney Kinsaul got the Straughn on the scoreboard with a strong layup to cut the score to 7-2.
Straughn fought back to start the second period thanks to buckets from Lexi Hooks and Kinsaul.
At halftime, Luveren led 26-20.
Luverne widened the gap to 38-25 heading into the final period of play.
Straughn added 10 points in the final period, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Luverne.
Kinsaul led the Lady Tigers with 10 points.
Allie Kelley finished with 6 points and Alyssa Dean had 5 points.
“We were getting good shots tonight, but we just get into to much of a drought,” Kinsaul said. “We will keep working at it.”
Straughn will face Pike County in the consolation bracket today at 10 a.m.
