Lady Bulldogs advance to Birmingham

The Andalusia Lady Bulldogs secured a spot in next week’s Class 4A State Volleyball Tournament as they topped Handley and Bibb County on Friday at the South Regional tournament in Montgomery.
The Andalusia Lady Bulldogs advanced to the South Regional quarterfinals after knocking off Handley 3-1.
In the opening set of the match, the Lady Bulldogs hammered Handley 25-8.
Handley got the first point of the set, but a kill from Rachel Dayton an ace from Millie Manring put the Lady Bulldogs up 2-1.
Handley tied the set back up and then Tori English gave the Lady Bulldogs a 3-2 lead with a monster kill.
Dayton followed with an ace to stretch the Andalusia lead to 4-2.
The Lady Bulldogs continued to surge with Dayton at the service line. She picked up another ace and another kill from English had Andalusia on top 10-2 before Handley called its first time out of the set.
Following the timeout, the Lady Bulldogs got two kills and block from Haley Ballard to put Andalusia up 15-2.
Ballard and English added a couple of kills a few moments later to give the Lady Bulldogs a 20-6 lead.
Mary Katherine Salter added a kill, Haley Harper picked up and ace and Dayton capped off the set with a kill.
Both teams battled it out in the second game, but it was the Lady Bulldogs who came away with a 25-19 victory.
The game went back-and-forth before the Lady Bulldogs took a 10-9 lead and never looked back.
Handley kept the game close, but the Lady Bulldogs found a way to pull out the win.
Dayton had several more kills in the second game to help led Andalusia to the win.
Anna Brady came up with a couple of big blocks, kills and one ace in the Lady Bulldogs’ win.
Harper and Ballard also picked up aces from the Lady Bulldogs.
In the third set, Handley jumped out to a 10-1 lead and held off Andalusia for a 25-21 win.
Brady picked up a kill for the first point of the set, but Handley went on a 10-0 run to take a commanding lead.
The Lady Bulldogs continued to fight back into the game, but couldn’t overcome the early deficit.
Andalusia responded with tremendous force in the second game and eliminated Handley with a 25-10 win.
Harper picked up another ace in the contest that put the Lady Bulldogs on top 10-4,
Manring got back-to-back aces a little later to give Andalusia a 20-7 lead.
The Lady Bulldogs continued to pour it on and Dayton ended the set with a thunderous spike to give Andalusia a 3-1 win.
“I thought we played pretty well,” Andalusia head coach Angie Grimes said. “In the third set, I felt like we had some communication problems, but the girls really responded well and found a way to win the fourth set.”
In the second match of the day, the Andalusia Lady Bulldogs swept Bibb County to clinch in spot in state tournament in Birmingham.
