Advocates needed for pilot program

Youth Advocacy Programs, thanks to a three-year $449,927 federal grant, is hiring a program coordinator, and two part-time advocates.

The South Alabama Victim Service Center is a multi-jurisdictional collaborative partnership in Covington and Butler counties.

The group hopes to provide for and coordinate an array of services to victims/survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking.

Brandy Hudson of YAP said this is a pilot program for the agency.

The advocate positions include one in Covington County and one in Butler County.

Hudson provided a job announcement that says the advocate will assist the program coordinator in carrying out a coordinated community response to victims by utilizing partners of the South Alabama Victim Service Center  and others to link clients to services for housing/shelter assistance, food/clothing, employment, and emergency needs; provide direct wraparound advocacy services for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating, dating and stalking violence.

Qualifications for the job include a high school diploma or GED equivalent. An associate degree is preferred.

Experience working in the community in a related human services field at a minimum and a bachelor’s degree in mental health related field such as psychology, social worker or related discipline is preferred.

The job requires reliable transportation, valid driver’s license among other things.

The agency is also looking for a project coordinator to serve Covington and Butler counties.

The job description includes managing the local YAP at the SAVCS located in Andalusia and satellite locations; facilitate a coordinated community response to victims by utilizing partners of the SAVCS and others by implementing advocacy for food/clothing, housing/shelter assistance and provide advocacy services as needed for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and dating or stalking violence.

The job requires a bachelor’s degree and two years of case management and support experience; or an associate’s degree and four years of case management and support experience.

Experience working in a nonprofit organization with HUD housing knowledge is a plus, but not required.

Knowledge and understand of prevention initiatives is a plus but not necessarily required.

Position requires reliable transportation, valid driver’s license.

Must be able to pass a background check and clearances.
