The Straughn Lady Tigers (19-0) continued their streak of perfection as they cruised to a championship Saturday in the 4th Annual Straughn High School Volleyball Tournament.

“It was a really good day of volleyball,” Straughn head coach Daniel Rodgers said. “We played really loose all day and got into the right spots.”

Straughn opened up pool play with a 2-0 victory over Brantley winning both sets 25-15.

The Lady Tigers continued to power through pool play with a 2-0 win over Excel. Straughn won the first set 25-10 and the second set 25-16.

In the semi-final match, the Lady Tigers battled through a second set loss to knock off Ariton 2-1. Straughn won the opening set 25-15 before losing the second set 25-23. The Lady Tigers picked up a 15-10 win in the final set to earn a spot in the championship game against Pleasant Home.

The Lady Tigers and Lady Eagles went back-and-forth in the opening set, but Straughn was able to come away with a 29-27 win.

Straughn finished off the Lady Eagles 25-13 in the second set to clinch the 4th Annual Straughn High School Volleyball Tournament championship trophy.

“I was really proud of the way all the girls played,” Rodgers said. “We had different girls step up at different times to pull us through. Sarah Langford gave us quality sets all day. At times when we needed a big block of kill against Ariton, Ashley Hughes came through. Hannah Lawless had several big kills. Laura Lee Blatz did a good job of getting us past Pleasant Home with her serves, and Sydney Kinsaul has some great digs throughout the day.”

Rodgers said that the Lady Tigers still must remain focused on the task at hand.

“Being undefeated is nice, but that’s not what defines this team,” Rodgers said. “Playing the right way is what defines us. We still want to reach our goal of hosting area, making it to Montgomery and possibly Birmingham.”

Straughn can clinch the area with a win tonight at home against Opp.
