The St. Vincent de Paul Society of Christ the King Catholic Church will hold its annual Friends of the Poor Walk this Sat., Sept. 24.
The society provides help with power bills, rent and holds a food bank twice each month, volunteer Kathy Frye said.
In 2015, the group service more than 1,063 families, and distributed 28,139 pounds of food. Total other assistance provided was $19,828. The St. Vincent de Paul Society also provides counselors to work with constituents.
The annual Friends of the Poor Walk is the only official fundraiser for the effort, although church members, other churches and Catholic Charities also support their efforts.
Registration for the event is set for 7 a.m. on Saturday at the church, located at 508 Sanford Road. Participants pledge as much as they please, or give canned goods. Participants may walk any portion of the two-mile course they like. The walk begins at about 8, and Susan Short, director of the Children’s Policy Council, will be the guest speaker.
Andalusia High School basketball team members and Anchor Club members will lead the walk.
Breakfast will be served afterward, and other activities include cake walks and face painting.
