The Andalusia 12U All-Stars got a treat from their coach Casey Jones when he took them to watch the Montgomery Biscuits take on the Chattanooga Lookouts at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery on Wednesday night.
“It was just something I wanted to do for them,” Jones said. “I wanted them to just have a chance to relax and have fun before we get the All-Star season started.”
Besides just attending the game, Jones said the Andalusia All-Stars were the Biscuits feature team for Wednesday night.
“I called the Biscuits public relations department just to see about getting a group discount for bringing the whole team,” Jones said. “Well they told me that they do something called Biscuit Buddies where they would feature the team. All we would have to do was purchase 30 tickets and everything else they did was included.”
Jones said that he then called City of Andalusia Department of Leisure Services program director Caitlin Shipman to see about helping with the trip.
“Credit goes to Caitlin Shipman for this,” Jones said. “I had planned on paying for the players, but I thought I would at least see if the city would help out with the cost a little, and when I called Caitlin she said the city would pay for all of the players and coaches.”
When the Andalusia All-Stars arrived at Riverwalk Stadium, they got more than they expected. They got to go on the field, talk to players and get autographs.
“They had no idea they were going to be the feature team,” Jones said. “When we got there, they found out that they would be having their names called out over the PA system and get to go on the field with the Biscuits.”
Before the game started, the Andalusia All-Stars had their names, numbers and positions called out. The Biscuits also included the Andalusia All-Stars’ logo and team name on the jumbotron during the player’s introduction.
“I thought they were just going to line them up on the foul line and call out their name, but they got to run out from the dugout and to their position when their names where called out,” Jones said. “They then got to stay out there with when they called out the Biscuits’ players and stand their with them as the national anthem played.”
During pre-game warm ups, Biscuits’ players gave each member of the Andalusia All-Stars a baseball and Sharpie to get autographs.
“They had a blast,” Jones said of his players. “One kid had about 15 autographs on his baseball. They loved every minute of it. During the game, we got sit right behind the third base dugout and some of the kids even caught some foul balls.”
The Andalusia 12U All-Stars began their district tournament on Thursday night against Zion Chapel.
