For some local businesses, Alabama’s national championship win has meant big business, while for others it was just business as usual.

Local stores such as Pink Peppers sell Alabama apparel and gifts. The Alabama Retail Association predicts an increase in sales tax revenue thanks to UA’s national championship.

At Hibbett Sports, which opened after Monday night’s 45-40 victory over Clemson, merchandise, including national championship T-shirts, has gone pretty fast.

“We sold 600 and something pieces through Tuesday and we have sold more today,” said local Hibbetts Sports manager Ben Jackson.

The Alabama Retail Association says that national championships increase business for retailers throughout the state.

According to ARA, when Alabama won the national championship in the 2012 season, taxable sales the state in January 2013 were some 3 percent higher than January 2012.

But when Alabama won for the 2011 season, revenues were up nearly 9 percent over January 2010.

“The effect of an Alabama win could last for a while,” Melissa Warnke, communications manager for ARA told The Dothan Eagle. “And it’s not just retailers who sell apparel who benefit. Even after shoppers pick up merchandise like T-shirts and hats with the game score, they’ll look for framed prints, jewelry, artwork and other items related to the national championship for gift-giving occasions.”

For other businesses such as Goody’s, who didn’t carry national championship merchandise, they haven’t seen that many sales.

“We have a few shirts in our juniors and women’s sections,” said manager Stephanie Kelley. “Our men’s section is picked over, but we’ve never gotten the championship shirts. We just have regular Alabama apparel.”

At Pink Peppers it was the same story.

“Unfortunately, we haven’t seen much effect from the championship game,” owner Marrianne DuBose said. “Our customers pretty much buy Alabama and Auburn throughout the year, regardless of their season.”
