Lady Wildcats push past Fleeta

After falling behind early in the contest, the Florala Lady Wildcats turned it on to down the Fleeta Lady Falcons 31-13 Monday night in the opening round of the Covington County Junior High basketball tournament in Pleasant Home.
Lady Falcons’ Haley Lewis had the hot hand to star the contest and dropped in 5 points to give Fleeta a 5-0 lead heading into the second period.
At the start of the second period, Candace Hurts put the Lady Falcons up 8-0 when she was fouled after hitting a basket and then knocked down the and-one opportunity.
A layup from Sarah Taylor then gave Fleeta a 10-0 lead with 4:10 left until halftime.
Ranisha Wright then got things going for the Lady Wildcats a helped trim the Lady Falcons’ lead down to 11-7 with a minute left before halftime.
Wright got a free throw to close out the first half, as the Lady Falcons held an 11-8 lead.
The Lady Wildcats came exploded at of the gate in the third period and a quick 3-pointer from MaKayla Parker tied the game up 11-11.
Another 3-pointer from Makayla Parker and a 4 points from Meridith Parker helped spark the Lady Wildcats to 21-11 lead heading into the fourth period.
Skylar York came alive in the fourth period for the Lady Wildcats and her 8-point final period lifted Florala to a 31-13 victory.
“We got down early and just never gave up,” Lady Wildcats’ coach Troy Stewart said. “They just continued to fight tonight and I couldn’t ask anymore from them.”
With the win, the Lady Wildcats advance to the semi-finals against Straughn Wednesday at 3.
