Lady Eagles soar into B’Ham

The Pleasant Home Lady Eagles advanced to Class 1A state volleyball tournament after finishing runner-up in the 1A South Super Regional in Montgomery on Saturday.
Pleasant Home got the day started off quickly with a sweep of the Wadley Lady Bulldogs in the opening round of the regional tournament.
In the opening game, Wadley took a 2-0 to start, but two strong blocks from the Lady Eagles’ River Baldwin erased the Lady Bulldogs’ early lead.
Wadley tied the contest and then when up 4-3, when a Baldwin tied the game with a kill.
Baldwin’s kill sparked a 7-0 run for the Lady Eagles to give them an 11-4 cushion.
Baldwin came up with another big block to give Pleasant Home a 12-5 lead, but 5-0 Wadley run trimmed the Lady Eagles’ lead down to 12-10.
Pleasant Home’s Cassidy Godwin ended the Lady Bulldogs’ rally with a kill to put the Lady Eagles up 13-10.
Godwin added another kill to put Pleasant Home 15-11, and a few points later an ace from Godwin gave the Lady Eagles a 17-14 advantage.
Anna Bulger and Baldwin turned it up a notch at that point for the Lady Eagles.
Bulger started with an ace to put Pleasant Home 20-15 and Baldwin followed with a kill for a 21-15 lead. Another ace from Bulger was followed by two kills from Baldwin, and then Bulger ended the first game with an ace for a 25-15 Lady Eagles’ victory.
Baldwin got the Lady Eagles off-and-running in the second game with a strong kill for the opening point.
Pleasant Home went up 2-0 before the Lady Bulldogs trimmed the lead to 2-1.
Johnnie Forehand picked up a kill that put the Lady Eagles up 4-1.
Scoring went back-and-forth for the next few points when Abby Walker picked up an ace that ignited a rally from the Lady Eagles.
Following Walker’s ace, the Lady Eagles took complete control of the contest with a 14-0 rally. Godwin picked up two strong kills during the rally and Walker added another ace.
Wadley picked up a point before the Lady Eagles regained the serve with a 20-4 lead.
Forehand followed with two-straight aces to give Pleasant Home a 22-4 lead.
Godwin added an ace for 24-6 lead and Baldwin sealed the victory with a strong block.
In the third game and facing elimination, Wadley came out strong and picked up an early 2-0 lead.
Pleasant Home, however, didn’t let the lead last long for the Lady Bulldogs.
After regaining the serve, Bulger tied the game with up powerful ace.
The Lady Eagles then took a 4-2 advantage with a strong kill from Forehand.
Bulger picked up two more aces and Baldwin got a big kill to help the Lady Eagles take a 10-2 lead.
Another kill from Baldwin put Pleasant Home on top 14-5 in the third game.
Sissy Martin then worked the hot hand for the Lady Eagles, as she picked up back-to-back aces to put Pleasant Home up 17-6.
Two strong kills from Godwin then helped give the Lady Eagles a 21-7 advantage.
Forehand put the finishing touches on the game with two aces to eliminate the Lady Bulldogs from the playoffs.
The Lady Eagles then went on to play the Kinston Lady Bulldogs in the regional semi-finals, and knocked off the Lady Bulldogs 3-1.
In the first game, Pleasant Home used a strong rally to take out the Lady Bulldogs, 25-15.
The Lady Eagles got out front early in the second game and held for a 25-8 win.
Kinston wasn’t going to go away quietly and managed to overtake the Lady Eagles in the third game 26-24 to avoid elimination.
Pleasant Home didn’t give the Lady Bulldogs much of a chance in the fourth game, as the Lady Eagles walked away with a 25-15 victory.
Pleasant Home was then matched up with Isabella for the Super South Regional championship match.
Last year, the Lady Eagles defeated Isabella for the regional championship, but this year it was Isabella’s turn to hoist the championship plaque.
The opening game went back-and-forth with strong efforts from both teams, but it was Isabella who came away with a 25-23 victory.
Isabella came out on fire in the second match, and used their momentum to garner a 25-12 win and put the Lady Eagles on the ropes.
The Lady Eagles responded with a strong effort in the third game and topped Isabella 25-17.
Isabella, however, won the next game 25-21 to take the south championship.
Pleasant Home will be back in action on Wednesday for the opening round of the AHSAA Class 1A state tournament in Birmingham. Pleasant Home will take on Decatur Heritage at 11 a.m.
