Opp OKs $1.87M capital plan

The city of Opp this week OK’d a $1.87 million capital improvement plan to include a variety of projects ranging from road repairs to sidewalks and a depot renovation and pool.
The projects are expected to be completed by 2018.
“We are going to do as much as we possibly can,” City Planner Jason Bryan said. “We have this list, so that when a funding source comes up, I can go to it.”
The projects include:
• Depot renovation with projected costs of $799,175. The city has a state department of transportation Transportation Alternative Program grant. The city’s share of the project is $299,175;
• Sidewalks to schools project with a projected cost of $503,930. The project is also funded through a TAP grant and the city is expected to pay $138,866;
• Pool project, with is expected to cost $411,000 and will be paid for from donations and the bonds from the sale of Opp CableTV;
• Douglas Avenue replacement, which has a $595,000 price tag. The city is expected to contribute $110,000 and is being paid for by an ALDOT grant and the 2015 bond;
• Douglas Avenue drainage improvement is expected to cost $134,000. The city will shell out $34,000 and a Community Development Block Grant will cover the additional $100,000.
Road repairs on 4th Street, Douglas Avenue, east of Cummings and Wyatt Avenue will cost $127,500 and will be paid for out of the gas tax fund;
• Road repairs on East Park Avenue (from Main to College) and Pearl from north to south, and will cost $56,000, and be paid for out of the gas tax fund;
• Road repairs on Brookwood and Golf Circle, which will cost $45,000 and be paid for out of the gas tax fund;
• Road repairs on Barnes Street and Danley from 331 to College, and will cost $170,000 and will be paid for out of the gas tax fund;
• Road repairs for East Park Avenue from Morgan to Maloy; Perry Store from the Post Office to the Bypass; Sellers from Monie to Hart and is estimated to cost $363,000, and be paid out of the gas tax fund.
• Road repairs for West Stewart and Nelson and Lassiter. Cost is anticipated at $62,000 and to be paid out of the gas tax fund;
• Road repairs for Hill, which are estimated at $20,000 and will be paid for out of gas tax monies; and,
• Drainage repairs for East Park from Main Street to College and Morgan to Maloy; Ellis Road and West Stewart, for a total of $43,000 and will come out of the gas tax fund.
Mayor John Bartholomew told council members they could add additional streets and projects to the plan.
