Habitat for Humanity broke ground on its sixth home Friday.

The home’s owners will be Jimmy and Nancy Shelton, and it will built on the former home place of Jimmy’s mother.

Habitat President Dale Pancake said the foundation has been leveled off, and the porch to Jimmy’s mother’s former home will remain.

“They will dig the footings tomorrow and pour the footings on Monday,” he said. “We’ll have a city inspection on Monday, and hope to start on Monday laying block.”

The Sheltons, who are both deaf, were excited about the build.

Speaking on their behalf, daughter Cindy Meadows said her daddy grew up on the property, located on Opp Avenue.

She said her daddy has spent some time helping with yard work with the Habitat organization.

Publicity chairman Kylan Lewis said he still needs volunteers for the build, which is set for Sept. 4 and 5, and Sept. 11 and 12.

Lewis said he has received phone calls from several who are interested in volunteering their time, including the AMVETS.

Work will begin at 7 a.m., on each build day, he said. Meals for volunteers will be provided.

Lewis said those who are interested in helping will need to park at the Northside Baptist Church and a bus from First Baptist Church will shuttle volunteers over to the site.
