Support Crossover, get into races free with food

Racing fans, start your canned food, toiletries, household items and monetary donations collecting because the third annual Crossover Night at the South Alabama Speedway will be held Saturday.

The race night, which features a Pro Late Model race at 100 laps, a modified, street stock, roadrunner, coyote, cuplite, mini sportsman and super stock races, benefits Crossover Ministry, a faith-based recovery ministry in Opp.

Grandstand admission is free with the donated items.

Crossover Ministry Executive Director Todd Sasser said the benefit helps the ministry quite a lot.

“I’ll put it this way, it’ll probably feed the ministry for about four months,” Sasser said. “We take up a lot of canned food items.”

Sasser said he doesn’t know how much food was collected last year, but will probably weigh this year’s haul.

“It’s a real big box truck,” he said. “We came real close to filling that truck up last year. It was a blessing. God was so good to us.”

Sasser said the ministry collected four months of food last year, adding that the goal for this year is to fill up a full box truck.

The ministry’s grocery bill is the cheapest expense, Sasser said, adding that if they do collect six months of food, it would be huge.

“Our grocery bill is probably the cheapest thing if you figure on average feeding 40 men three meals a day, seven days a week,” he said. “The main thing we’re buying is flour, sugar, tea, coffee, milk, creamer and meat.

“The canned food items take such a load off financially,” he said. “It helps out a lot.”

In addition to canned food items, toiletries and household items, Sasser said monetary donations are welcome as well.

“The first two years, we probably took in over $2,000 in cash,” he said. “They just throw $20, or what they have, in a bucket.”

The SAS is located on Highway 52 between Opp and Kinston.

Gates open at 3 p.m. with races starting at 6.
