AMVETS Post 23 will place memorial flags on veterans’ graves in Opp on Sunday in honor of Memorial Day.
The public is invited to attend and help to distribute flags at 2 p.m.
AMVETS Post 23 Commander James Clifton said for years, the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Ladies Auxiliary had decorated the graves of veterans in the Opp City cemeteries.
“Following the closure of the VFW post and the beginning of the AMVETS Post 23, we picked up the program in November 2014 and put flags on veterans’ graves for Veterans Day, and will do the same on Sunday for Memorial Day,” Clifton said.
Additionally, the AMVETS will hold a Memorial Day service in Opp at Peaceful Acres on Monday at 10 a.m.
Clifton said Ben Reynolds organized a Memorial Day service in 2006.
“With the help and support from James Farrell King, Charlie Meeks, Drexel Richards, Norman Richards and other members of the Masonic Lodge 605, Ben brought the community together to honor and remember the sacrifices made by our brave men and women,” he said.
Clifton said in the memory of Reynolds, the City of Opp will continue to hold the Memorial Day service in honor of veterans the fallen veterans.
A tent will be set up to shade attendees from the sun, and bottled water will be provided by the Opp Fire Department.
