Old men’s group offers more than just coffee

They are men with many names.
They are men who laugh sometimes more than they talk.
They are men who don’t take themselves seriously.
They are the old men’s coffee club that meets every weekday morning at the Andalusia Burger King.
Kennith Mount, Jack Perry, Mickey Pitts, Steve Bozeman, Charles Jackson, Lester O’Neal, John Loflin, Ivan Bishop and David Moore sit in a section inside the fast-food restaurant with coffee in hand and talk a little about everything.
Topics range from what’s in the newspaper that day, politics, religion and what happened on the golf course.
Ever since Burger King opened in Andalusia, the coffee club has met every morning.
“The big draw is the cheap coffee,” Mount quipped.
Coffee costs 55 cents with the senior discount.
One of the many funny stories the group brings up every day includes one where they debate whether or not “Shakespeare” was in the Bible.
To this day, they’re still making the argument that Shakespeare is a book in the good book.
Not everyone in the club is retired. Some work part time and are still holding jobs.
But work is the last thing the club members talk about on a given day.
Loflin, a history buff, can talk for hours about the Civil War, and has been christened the “Weather Man” of the group.
“He’s never right,” O’Neal quips about Loflin.
Laughter is a contant staple with the club.
Those who wear their emotions on their sleeve wouldn’t make it very long, O’Neal said.
The club started meeting at the BBQ Pit on River Falls Street in the 1970s. One of Andalusia’s former mayors owned the joint.
The BK club isn’t the only club in town.
There’s a coffee group that meets every morning at Hardee’s and McDonald’s as well.
For a dose of reality, laughter and good old common sense, the old men’s coffee club Burger King meets from 7 a.m. until around 9 a.m. in the restaurant lobby.
