Organizers pleased with Relay event

Hundreds of people gathered for Covington County’s annual Relay for Life event at the Kiwanis Fairgrounds Friday night.

Cancer survivors, care takers and those who gave constant support were honored during the evening, which was filled with activities from the survivor’s lap, reception and bingo, sack race, luminaria ceremony, fireworks display, the tug-of-war contest and a closing ceremony.

“The night went real well,” Covington County Relay for Life Chairman Larry Brown said. “All in all, we had a lot more survivors. I was really pleased with the turnout.”

Brown said quite a few turned out for the luminaria ceremony, and hopes that next year the attendance will be even better.

Organizers were still tallying money raised, but more than $86,963 has been accounted for when the Star-News went to press.

See the Tues., April 28, edition for a complete wrap-up of the night’s events.
