Great baseball and warm weather at Opp’s Spring Break tournament

I had a chance to catch a lot of high school baseball, and even a little sun earlier this week at Opp’s 2015 Butch Youmans Memorial Spring Break baseball tournament.

There was a lot of good baseball to watch over the course of the two-day tournament.

Opp put together three good games to clinch the top spot of the tournament over second place T.R. Miller and third place W.S. Neal.

The Bobcats got it done in all aspects of the game. They hit they ball effectively, the defense was nearly flawless, and the pitching was outstanding.

Senior Cale Pierce threw the only complete-game shutout of the entire tournament Tuesday afternoon against Brantley in 5-0 win.

Pierce also sparked the Bobcats on offense with a solo home run against Brantley. Pierce’s home run was the only home run hit on Merchant’s Field, which was the bigger of the two fields used, during the tournament.

The Bobcats also started several underclassmen from the junior varsity squad who helped them clinch the tournament title.

Straughn and Andalusia also participated in the Opp tournament.

Straughn went 1-2 in the tournament with a victory over Opp’s junior varsity team on Monday night.

Lane Sirmon was a big part of the Tigers’ offense, and also pitched well in Tuesday’s loss to T.R. Miller.

Andalusia’s game results weren’t what they would have like for them to be, but the young Bulldogs showed signs of a good ball club. They just have to be able to cut out some of the more costly errors early in games.

Peyton Garner and Will Jones swung the bats well during the tournament, and showed a glimpse of what the Bulldogs could become as they grow and mature as players.

All-in-all, it was beautiful weather to spend two days at the ballpark, and it was fun watching our local teams compete with some of the top programs from the surrounding counties.
