Ty Hammett has been named to the 2015 All-Alabama Academic team with the Alabama Community College System.
Hammett will soon be receiving recognition for his achievement in Montgomery for his academic achievement, distinguished leadership and community service.
“It’s a real honor and a blessing,” Hammett said. “I really didn’t expect to get it..
Chloe Langston of Honoraville was also named to the All-Alabama Academic team.
Both are students at Lurleen B. Wallace Community College.
“These students represent the highest achievers of our college,” LBWCC President Dr. Herb Riedel said. “We are extremely proud of what they have accomplished both in and out of the classroom, and this is a well-deserved recognition for them both.”
All-Alabama Academic Team students are nominated by their respective colleges and must possess a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.25, be involved in campus activities, and have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours at the institution.
Hammett said he thinks his GPA at the moment is at 3.7, and it took a lot of hard work to earn this distinction.
“I had to keep my GPA up and also have to be a leader,” he said.
There were five finalists selected from the Andalusia campus with Hammett being one of them.
“Just being selected for that was just an honor itself,” he said.
Hammett will complete an associate degree before transferring to Troy University to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing.
“I always like helping people, and in nursing, I will be able to do that,” Hammett said. “I know it will be challenging, but also rewarding.”
Hammett’s long-term goal is to become a traveling nurse.
“Traveling nursing is appealing because I would like to see other areas of this country, and possibly other countries,” he said.
While at LBWCC, Hammett has served as an Ambassador, was a member of the Student Government Association and participated in the Alpha Beta Eta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society.
After graduating in May, Hammett is planning on spending part of his summer shadowing a relative who is a nurse practitioner.
Hammett is the son of Mark Hammett and Traci Davenport, both of Andalusia.
