A special election to renew three separate property taxes for education is being held today.
In December, Covington County’s three boards of education agreed to ask the commission to hold the election to renew three separate ad valorem taxes in the county.
Covington County Board of Registrars Chairman Sammy Glover said all registered voters need to vote in their normal polling precinct.
All polls will be open from 7 a.m until 7 p.m. today.
The election, if approved, will re-certify the existing millages for the county.
Specifically, the voters will consider:
• A 1-mill, county-wide tax that has been on the books for 70 years. This tax must gain 60 percent approval by voters.
• A 3-mill, county-wide tax that has been on the books since 1985.
• A 3-mill, district tax, that also has been on the books since 1985. Andalusia voters must approve this for the tax to continue in Andalusia; Opp voters must approve for the Opp district; and all other voters must approve for the county.
