Lady Tigers’ season ends in Dothan

The Straughn Lady Tigers’ season came to an unfortunate end Saturday in Dothan with a 49-33 loss to the UMS-Wright Lady Bulldogs.
It was a slow start for both teams, but the Lady Bulldogs broke onto the scoreboard first when Lauren Lomax got a bucket at the five-minute mark in the first period. McKenzie Courtney followed that with two free throws for an early 4-0 lead for the Lady Bulldogs. Brentley Armstrong accounted for the Lady Tigers’ first points with a layup that cut the Lady Bulldogs’ lead to two. The Lady Bulldogs then got two consecutive baskets from Emani Mhoon and Courtney to push the lead to 8-2. Jacie Williamson got a steal moments later and turned it into a fastbreak layup with two minutes left in the first. Mhoon finished the scoring in the first with two free throws with 6 seconds left in the period. Heading into the second period, the Lady Bulldogs were on top 10-4.
The Lady Tigers got on the scoreboard first in the second period with a 1-for-2 trip at the free throw line for Williamson. Ashley Scott put the Lady Bulldogs up 12-5 with six minutes left in the second period. Katelyn Kinsaul dug into the Lady Bulldogs’ lead with a clutch 3-pointer, and Armstrong chipped deeper into the lead by following with a short jumper. With just over three minutes left in the second, the Lady Tigers trailed 12-10. Courtney extended the Lady Bulldogs’ lead to 15-10 with a 3-pointer of her own. Lomax pushed the lead back to 7 points with a 2-for-2 trip to the free throw line. Janelle Nurse fired back, and buried a 3-pointer at the two-minute mark. On the other end of the court, Scott put the Lady Bulldogs up 19-13 with just under two minutes left in the second. Armstrong then knocked down a short jumper to bring the score to 19-15. Nurse followed with a 3-pointer that cut the Lady Bulldogs’ lead to 19-18 with 56 seconds left in the second period. The Lady Bulldogs finished off the second period by hitting 5-of-6 free throw opportunities to give them a 24-18 lead at halftime.
Williamson started the third period off with a 1-for-2 trip to the free throw line, and the rest of the period was mainly spent at the Lady Bulldogs’ charity stripe. The Lady Bulldogs went a combined 5-for-8 from the free throw line in the. Williamson finished off the third period with a layup, but the Lady Tigers were down 34-21 heading into the final period.
The Lady Bulldogs started off the final period with six straight points, and led 40-21 with seven minutes remaining in the contest. Williamson drained a 3-pointer, and then Kinsaul finished off an old-fashioned 3-point play that put the score at 40-27. Williamson buried another 3-pointer with just over three minutes left in the contest. The Lady Bulldogs finished off the final period by converting on 8-of-12 free throws in the final two minutes for a 49-33 victory. The Lady Bulldogs hit 23-of-31 free throws in the contest, and the Lady Tigers converted on 3-of-7 free throws.
Courtney led the Lady Bulldogs with 15 points, and Mhoon finished with 12 points. Scott pulled down 14 rebounds.
Williamson led the Lady Tigers in scoring with 12 points, and Nurse had 9 points. Williamson finished the night with 6 rebounds.
