The Andalusia Bulldogs moved into undisputed first place in the South Alabama Conference basketball wars Thursday night, but staying there might be another question.
Coach Clayton Bryant pointed out, “We have plenty of tough opponents left on the schedule. We’ve been playing pretty good ball, but we’ll have to continue to play the best we can if we want to win the conference.”
Thursday night, the Bulldogs dropped Troy, the lone remaining undefeated team in the loop play outside the locals, in a 78-65 contest on the Andalusia court.
The Troy club started like a house afire, hitting everything they shot and took a 21-20 first period lead. Cooling off from the floor in the second stanza, Troy trailed 46-35 at intermission. Andalusia then came on strong in the third period to run the score up to 65-46 and cruised in the fourth quarter by a 13-point margin.
Tracy Davis paced the Andy scorers with 23 points. Rex Rawls had 13 and Mike Clausen and Roy Weeden chipped in a dozen each. Davis had 11 rebounds and Weeden 10 to lead in that department.
For Troy, Leroy Armstrong tossed in 23 to head the effort. Marvin Williams added 14 and Willie Bean and Geral Batie collected 11 each.
In a Tuesday night contest, Andalusia stopped Samson 69-43 in an easy victory.
The Bulldogs led it all the way and were never in danger of being headed.
Weeden paced the Andalusia attack with 17 points while Davis got 14 and Thaddaus Grace and Mike Clausen added 10 apiece. Weeden had 13 rebounds, Davis 12 and Leonard Roberston 10.
For Samson, Bill King collected 13 and Manual Baldwin hit for 10.
Andalusia now has a perfect 6-0 mark in league play and a 15-3 overall record.
