Lady Tigers earn title win

The Straughn Middle School Lady Tigers capped off their 11-1 season by defeating the Fleeta Lady Falcons 37-19 in the championship game of the Covington County Middle School tournament.

 

“Credit goes to the girls, and I’m very proud to be their coach,” Lady Tigers’ head coach Scott Kinsaul said.

 

The Lady Tigers came out of the gate charging, and by the end of the first period the Lady Tigers led 13-3.

 

Strong shooting and tight defense continued to pace the Lady Tigers in the second period. At half time, the Lady Tigers were out front 20-9.

 

With the tenacity and quickness, of the Lady Tigers, the Lady Falcons weren’t able to find much space for a shot. After three periods of play, the Lady Tigers led 29-15.

 

The Lady Falcons never gave up the fight, though, and they kept the Lady Tigers on their toes. The Lady Tigers were able to hold on for a 37-19 championship game victory.

 

“Fleeta played a great game, and it’s always nice to see to great teams compete like that,” Kinsaul said. “I’m really proud of out girls they have gotten better from start to finish.”

 

Laura Lee Blatz paced the Lady Tigers with 11 points, and Sadie Crum finished with 9 points.

 

Charlotte Taylor was the leading scorer for the Lady Falcons with 7 points. Kristian Robertson added 6 points for the Lady Falcons.

 

“The girls played hard, and I think we surprised a lot of folks this season,” Lady Falcons’ head coach Mike Buckelew said. “I’m extremely proud of them. They worked hard all year.”

 

The All-Tournament team included: Hope Gunter (Pleasant Home), Kaiden LeMaire (Florala), Natalie Feagin (Red Level), Kristian Robertson and Charlotte Taylor (Fleeta), Laura Lee Blatz, Sadie Crum and Kylee Wilson (Straughn).
