Region’s shaking up for local teams

What a crazy weekend of sports.
That’s what, I imagine, a lot of folks were saying after Alabama lost to Ole Miss, Mississippi State crushed Texas A&M, Utah topped UCLA, and Arizona beat Oregon, to name a few.
While those games prompted a lot of head scratching on the part of coaches and fans, these past Friday night’s games had the same result.
I’m speaking first and foremost about Opp beating then-No. 2 T.R. Miller, and Trinity claiming a win over Ashford.
The results of those two high school games mean a lot to two of our local teams — OHS and Andalusia.
For the Bobcats, the win over the Tigers was their first since 1993 and puts them at 3-0 and at the top of the Class 3A, Region 1 standings.
Andalusia, who beat Trinity 33-15, earlier this season in Montgomery, is sitting at 2-2 in the Class 4A, Region 2 standings with the Wildcats. Those who will remember, the Bulldogs lost pretty badly to Ashford in a 37-7 decision.
Opp is one win away from securing a playoff berth. Andalusia needs to win the next two to clinch.
The Bobcats host Excel while the Bulldogs visit Headland this week. AHS then hosts Montgomery Catholic on Oct. 17.
Below Opp in the standings is TRM, Geneva and Bayside Academy, who fill out the top four.
St. James, Ashford and Straughn are above Andalusia and Trinity.
I think that Andalusia may finish as the No. 4 seed and will likely have to travel to play Leeds in the first round.
Opp should win enough to be able to host the first round of the state playoffs. The top two host, while the bottom two travel for the first round.
Let’s not forget about Straughn, who travels to play Ashford tomorrow night.
The Tigers are currently sitting at 3-1 in the region, and if they win, they’ll get into the postseason. If I am correct, they’ll get a clear picture at where their seeding is at the end of the night tomorrow.
In the next couple weeks, the playoff picture will get clearer and clearer, and I can’t wait to see what will unfold.
