Why does baseball get exciting during the postseason?

Why isn’t baseball exciting at times during the regular season?

I’m sure this is what many were asking themselves, including me, last night when the Kansas City Royals topped the Oakland Athletics 9-8 in 12 innings at Kansas City in the American League wildcard game.

The Royals battled back from a 7-3 deficit and a batter who was hitting 0-for-5, Salvador Perez, came through for his team with the walk-off single that shot just out of reach of Oakland third baseman Josh Donaldson.

Earlier in the game, Perez had a chance to end the game, but squandered the opportunity by grounding out to second.

At that point I was thinking, could somebody please step up and end this game?

And I was quite surprised that Perez came through for the Royals, who now advance to the AL Division series, where they’ll face the Anaheim Angels.

Plays like that are why I think postseason baseball can be so exciting.

While I haven’t been to a playoff game in person, I can sort of gleam how loud it can be in the stadiums.

The National League wildcard was played last night between San Francisco and Pittsburgh. Other teams in the postseason include the Los Angeles Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals, the Baltimore Orioles and the Detroit Tigers.

As October rolls along, the division series transitions into the championship series.

The winners from both league championships then face off for the World Series title.

Winning that first game of the championship series is crucial.

This season, there will be a new World Champion crowned as the Boston Red Sox finished a season they’ll likely forget in the next few days.

If one were to ask who I think is going to win the title, I’d have to say that I really don’t know.

Fortunately, there are 31 days in the month of October and that gives us fans plenty of time to sit back and watch the excitement unfold game by game until someone new hoists the Commissioner’s Trophy.
