Covington County residents who shop at home can take advantage of the annual sales tax holiday this weekend.

The state of Alabama, most local municipalities and the county commission has waived sales tax on back-to-school items for this weekend.

The holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday and ends at midnight on Sunday.

Clothing is exempt as long as it is $100 or less per article of clothing. Items included in this are things such as belts, boots, caps, cats, diapers, dresses, gloves, gym suits, hats, hosiery, jackets, jeans, ties, pajamas, pants, raincoats, robes, school uniforms and more.

However, the following items are still taxable:

Belt buckles, briefcases, cosmetics, hair notions, handbags, jewelry, sunglasses, eyeglasses, contacts, umbrellas and more.

Additionally, computer software, computers and school computer supplies under $750 are also tax free.

School supplies $50 and less per item are exempt.

Exempt items include things such as binders, blackboard chalk, book bags, calculators, compasses, composition books, crayons, erasers, folders, glue, paste
and glue sticks, and other school supplies.
