CC 12U girls finish 1-2 at Regional

Covington County finished 1-2 at the 2014 Southeast Regional 12U Babe Ruth Softball Tournament last week in Morganton, N.C.

CC defeated Winter Park, Fla. 3-0 in its first game of pool play, but fell 15-1 to Pitt County, N.C. and 12-2 to Bunker Hill, N.C.

Bad weather canceled play on Friday and Covington County was set to play the Ocala Shockers out of Florida on Saturday to finish pool play, but the team decided it was best to come on home, team manager Keith Gunter said.

“I’m proud of them for making it,” Gunter said.

Gunter said in the 3-0 win over Winter Park, pitcher Ava Bailey threw a no-hitter and the infield defense played well behind her to get the win.

“We pretty much shut the first team out,” he said.

Gunter said the loss to Pitt County was against a team that was “stacked” with talent.

In the loss to Bunker Hill, CC had a bad first inning and couldn’t quite recover.
“We gave up a pile of runs,” Gunter said. “Our defense fell apart in the first inning. After the first, we held them to one run.

“It wasn’t our best game we played,” he said. “We just didn’t have our heads in it.”
